Born in St. Louis, she relocated in New York City at the age of only a few days. In 1991, she received a bachelor's degree in art at Barnard College. The same year, she got an entry-level job in a restaurant named An American Place for one year. Guarnaschelli gained her first dining experiences through watching recipes she'd written in her mother's cookbooks getting tested at the home. After working under Larry Forgione, she worked at several restaurants including Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot in New York France Los Angeles. Her final position was as executive cook at Butter. Guarnaschelli was a guest on Food Network's Iron Chef America where she competed against Cat Cora in the Farmers Market Battle of 2007. Since then, she has been at the show's guest judges. In addition, she took part in The Next Iron Chef Season Four in 2011, when she finished third. Additionally, she was eliminated in her final competition, the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. Following The next Iron Chef's fourth season she was appointed sous-chef by Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. She became host of The Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008. There, she teaches a small group of students in how to recreate classic dishes.
